• Demand for initial jobless benefits doubles in Georgia as coronavirus layoffs increase

    Unemployed Georgians filed 12,140 initial claims for jobless pay last week. That is more than twice the demand state labor officials saw during the previous week.
    "We are seeing bigger numbers right now than we saw during the peak of the recession in 2008-2009," said Mark Butler, Georgia's Labor Commissioner. "And we have about 1,000 fewer employees right now to handle the traffic."
